The Essentials is a comprehensive exploration of the practice of Pilates. Each of the 4 parts of the series will include movement practice, discussion, and breakdown of specific exercises with the intention of cultivating a keener understanding of the various aspects of the practice.

Saturdays 1:30-4p

1/12: Part 1: An Overview

An Overview. We’ll discuss the principles of the practice, explore the breath, and practice exercises from both the mat and reformer repertoire.

1/19: Part 2: The Spine

The Spine; its neutral alignment, its capacity for multi-directional movement, and its propensity to illuminate where we are in space.

1/26: Part 3: The Core

The Core; its many physical layers as well as its relationship to embodied movement and whole self.

2/2: Part 4: The Extremities

The Extremities; as we invite the arms and legs into the conversation, we will pay special attention to how the rest of the body is still involved, encouraging movement that is integrated and whole.

About Justine Malick

Justine is inspired by movement and the body, and her tremendous respect for the body is reflected in her teaching. Pilates and yoga support each other beautifully, and Justine whole-heartedly believes in the harmonious union of the two practices. Justine’s first explorations of movement began at a young age – she started walking at 8 months & hasn’t really stopped since. She also spent over 10 years as a competitive figure skater.

Justine is a 500hr RYT and has completed yoga trainings with YogaWorks and Embodied Flow; she also completed a comprehensive Pilates training through Body Arts Science International (BASI). Justine views movement as medicine and is forever fascinated by the healing and transformative power of working with the body-mind through the blend of these various modalities. In addition to studying Yoga & Pilates, Justine has completed trainings in Deep Bodywork Massage and Resistance Flexibility Strength Training (RFST).
